Afghanistan will be touring Sri Lanka for a series of three ODIs in November this year, the Afghanistan Cricket Board revealed in a media release on Monday (October 17). The matches, part of the World Cup Super League, will be played on November 25, 27 and 30 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
The matches were initially scheduled to be played in February 2023 but with the cricket calendars of both teams allowing for a reschedule to an earlier date, they were brought forward to November.
This will be Afghanistan’s first bilateral visit to Sri Lanka. These two teams have played four ODIs earlier – two times in the Asia Cup and twice in the World Cup – with Sri Lanka having a 3-1 head to head record.
“We are pleased with the outcomes of our discussions and negotiations with Sri Lanka Cricket on shifting the schedule to November this year. We are looking forward to playing Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, which is a heavy task but a challenge that I know our players will embrace,” said Mirwais Ashraf, ACB Chairman.
Afghanistan are currently seventh in the World Cup Super League with 10 wins out of 12 games while Sri Lanka are 10th with only six wins in 18 games. A finish inside the top eight will guarantee a team a direct berth in the 50-over Men’s World Cup which will be played in India, with the hosts getting an automatic qualification.
