It’s the last day of public school in NYC, but don’t miss these key dates from the 2024-2025 calendar
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — School’s out for summer for New York City public school students, as June 26 marked the last day of school for the 2023-2024 school year with a full day of classes.
Students are able to celebrate the final day with cheers and hugs before kicking off a summer of sun and fun lasting until they return to school buildings in September — and it’s never too early to start planning for next year.
The city Department of Education’s (DOE) academic calendar includes some two-dozen days off between the first day of school on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, and the last day of classes on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
The calendar gives time off for the religious holidays, like Good Friday, Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr, and week-long breaks for winter, mid-winter and spring recesses, which include Christmas and Passover. Diwali has also been added as a public school holiday.
The school calendar also allows time off for Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Columbus Day), Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day and Juneteenth.
Dates for parent-teacher conference days for elementary, middle schools and high schools are also posted in the calendar.
