Allow online filing of appeals, applications: NGT practitionersChennai: The Regular Practitioners’ Forum of National Green Tribunal’s South zone in Chennai requested an option for online application submissions, including original applications, miscellaneous petitions and appeals, similar to other courts. This request was made during a meeting in Chennai on Tuesday with the NGT’s chairperson, Justice Prakash Shrivastava.Implementing this feature would allow counsels to attend hearings online, enabling the tribunal to hear more cases, thus reducing the backlog, said R Dilip, an advocate with the tribunal.Currently, after a case receives a number, counsels must submit documents manually. Only daily orders and final judgment copies are accessible on the website.Advocates and govt pleaders also expressed a desire to synchronize their holiday calendar with that of the Madras High Court, taking into account local and regional observances. The current NGT calendar does not accommodate many Tamil festivals for the Southern zone in Chennai.Furthermore, the forum recommended the issuance of practice directions and the provision of WiFi connectivity at the Chennai bench. Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and K Satyagopal, the Southern Zone judicial member, also attended the meeting.Additionally, applicants, represented by D Ramachandran, a resident-activist from Adambakkam, proposed an online petition filing system. They suggested that the tribunal could number cases based on public letters containing evidence, mirroring how tribunal members currently take suo motu cognizance of environmental issues reported in the media.
