How calendar ‘figures’ out adhik maas, kshay maasAhmedabad: Year 2023 had an additional month in the Gujarati calendar, identified as ‘Adhik maas’ or ‘Purushottam maas.’ The month is added every three years to balance the solar and lunar cycles that span 365 and 354 days respectively. “However, only a few know that the calendar also has the provision of an omitted month or ‘kshay maas’ to counterbalance the additional days,” said Bhavesh Pathak, a mathematics teacher and a panchang enthusiast from Rajkot.Pathak was in the city for the mathematics convention. This omission takes place every 141 years, he said. “I have been trying to explain to people the Indian panchang system through mathematics. We wonder about more than one tithi on a single day or the gap day between Diwali and New Year. However, these make our system robust and pretty close to celestial phenomena,” said Pathak. “Tithi is the time taken by the Moon to travel 12 degrees from the Sun.
