2024 Social Security benefit payment calendar
Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends money to millions of beneficiaries, including retired workers and survivors, that is, the children, spouses, widows, widowers, or parents of any deceased beneficiary.
The SSA also sends out on a monthly basis disability benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
As 2023 ends, the SSA has already shared the payment schedule for next year’s benefits. Here is an explanation of the schedule and issuing dates month by month in 2024.
Social Security: what is the final payment schedule for 2024?
According to SSA’s schedule, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are sent out on the first day of each month. If the first day of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, the payment is advanced to the first working business day prior to that date.
On the third day of each month, money is sent to recipients who began receiving their payments before May 1997. If the third day falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are also advanced.
For those who collect Social Security benefits (retiree, survivors, or SSDI) and SSI at the same time, the SSI payment is sent on the first day of the month and the Social Security payment on the third day.
The rest of the Social Security checks are sent on Wednesdays, according to the date of birth of the beneficiaries:
Second Wednesday of the month: retirees with a date of birth between the 1st and 10th Third Wednesday: beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th day Fourth Wednesday: retirees born between the 21st and 31st
If Wednesday is a holiday, payment is advanced to the first business day before.

The January 2024 Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment is mailed on December 29, 2023, since January 1 is a holiday.

Social Security payments are sent via direct deposit to beneficiaries who have provided a bank account to SSA or via postal mail, the latter takes longer to arrive.
