The 2025 school calendar includes three extra holidays
As students prepare to head back to school after the public school winter holidays, the Department of Basic Education has revealed the proposed school calendar for 2025.
According to the calendar, the 2025 school year will start on 15 January, two days earlier than the 2024 school year, and conclude on 12 December.

That means the academic year will include 200 school days.
An interesting addition to the 2025 school year is the three extra “special school holidays”.
2025 will have 27 standard school holidays, which is an increase from the 25 holidays in 2024.
The three extra school holidays include:
Tuesday, 29 AprilWednesday, 30 AprilFriday, 2 May 2025
Seeing that Freedom Day is being observed on Monday, 28 April 2025, and Worker’s Day falls on Thursday, 1 May 2025, the Department of Basic Education and relevant stakeholders decided to write off the entire week, making Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday holidays.

According to section 2(1) of the Act, “whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday.”
BusinessTech also reports that the Department of Basic Education and relevant stakeholders have the authority to grant special school holidays should they see fit.
