CPS Classes To Start A Week Later Because Of Democratic Convention Under Proposed Calendar
CHICAGO — Chicago Public Schools has a proposed schedule for the 2024-25 school year, and it is now available for review on the CPS website.
Comments on the schedule will be accepted until Wednesday.
The biggest proposed change is for school to start one week later for the next school year, on Monday, Aug. 26.
In 2023, at the start of the current school year, CPS began classes on Monday, Aug. 21.
The district used to start on the Tuesday after Labor Day, but a recent change attempted to align CPS with suburban and Catholic school schedules, which traditionally started earlier.
But for the upcoming school year, CPS will face a hurdle that suburban schools won’t have to worry about: the Democratic National Convention on August 19-22, leading to the change.
A CPS email Block Club Chicago obtained stated, “We are making these changes to the 2024–25 calendar to accommodate the logistical needs of the city, including our public safety partners, as Chicago hosts the Democratic National Convention in August of 2024.”
This year students were able to wrap up the first semester ahead of the two-week holiday break at the end of the year.
But next year, due to the later start, the first semester won’t end until after the break, under the proposed schedule.
School is scheduled to end a week later as well: The last day of school is June 6 this year, scheduled for June 12 in 2025.
CPS stressed that the proposed 2024-25 changes are only for this year due to the convention: “Under this proposal, these changes will only be in effect for one school year, with the calendar for the 2025–26 school year returning to a schedule similar to what CPS is using this year.”
The calendar for the 2025–26 school year is available for review as well.
CPS says that it welcomes input from community members and parents, and a survey is available here, under “2024” and then “February”. Respondents have until Wednesday to submit.
The survey questions ask for thoughts on the Thanksgiving weeklong break, having spring break during the last week in March and whether both schedules should be approved this year. There is also a space for respondents to submit their comments or suggestions.
Chicago Public Schools is a citywide public school district that contains more than 600 schools, including elementary and secondary, charter, contract and SAFE schools.
