We’ve got a race on our hands. Carlos Sainz passed Max Verstappen – who subsequently retired with a brake failure – en route to victory at the Australian Grand Prix, and Charles Leclerc’s 2nd-place finish means Ferrari are only four points behind Red Bull in the constructors’ championship ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix.
Will Ferrari come to regret jetissoning Sainz for Lewis Hamilton? The Spaniard was also the only non-Red Bull driver to top a podium last year, whereas the seven-time champion has had a desperate start to this season, trailing behind George Russell twice, retiring in Melbourne, and even being beaten on debut by 18-year-old Oliver Bearman.
The F1 calendar has been expanded to a whopping 24 races for the 2024 season, which means Verstappen could break his record of 19 Grand Prix victories. Or Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin could get their acts together and actually make a go of things this time.
There are no major rule changes, no rookies and no new tracks, and F1 has announced six sprint races: the Chinese, Miami, Austrian, US, Brazilian and Qatar Grands Prix. Read on as we explain how to watch F1 races online and on TV.
